♡ december artist profile: alice snow ♡

alice is a photographer from new zealand that captures themes of nostalgia and fading memory through scenes shot in dreamy, vintage color tones (photo blog)

how did you get started in film?
i’m an all round creative person and had never tried photography, but i fancied expanding my knowledge. i’m also quite sentimental so capturing important memories from my life almost acted as a sedative. i heavily studied the history of art (and still do) and it opened me up to whole new world of expressing myself. i wanted to learn the basics through schooling but found they didn’t practice particularly the classic form of photography but valued post-processing instead. i rebelled against their ideals because i had so many favourite film photographers. i did some small study, then my father spontaneously handed me a film camera and here i am now.

what is your favorite thing to shoot?
a lot of my favourite places as a child are now gone and i want to keep what i have seen and adored as a record. i try to capture photos without suggesting human life but rather an empty world that i live in. i prefer the idea of places fading more than people fading. i love shooting my childhood neighborhood and memories as well as where i travel to; the woods which is home to ghosts and wildlife, homes suited to their owners, beaches with washed up tales, eerie highways that are forever empty, the places that have yet to tell a story and that will one day disappear. my aim is to create a sense of nostalgia and to provoke feelings of curiosity, love and loss.

what was your first subject and what is your latest subject?
my first subject was the graveyard closest to me. i originally wanted to capture the trees there (but was unsuccessful). but the few photos i did capture at night i really loved. there are four yew trees in a row above all the rest that have grown naturally to resemble four witches guarding the hill. they are really spectacular and i have loved them since i was a child. i have continued the witch concept throughout some of my photography too. my latest subject is actually from the same graveyard where i shot ghosts by their graves.

who are your favorite film photographers?
i have a few but i have always been interested in hana haley and how she emits emotion and nostalgia in fashion photography. i also love everyone on graceandgirlhood, it’s a perfect collection. my favourites are mana maus, dani rose and jessica woods. they all seem familiar in my line of work and i really look up to all of them

when you’re not shooting film, what are you up to?
i spend most of my time with my beloved and creating/illustrating. i do photo realistic commissions for anyone who asks and i do illustration work for my mothers store. next year i plan on opening my own online store to sell all of my creations, hopefully including some photography too!
