Sarah Elizabeth Hartman, along with being this blog’s first-ever featured dancer (check out her interview with us here!), is a dancer, choreographer, visual artist, and the AD/founder of Moirai Ballet.

Hartman did her primary ballet training at Academy of Ballet in San Francisco and Bayer Ballet. She also pursued tertiary education, completing her undergrad in Liberal Arts at Saint Mary’s College through their LEAP program and earning a dual Master’s degree in Jewish Studies and Arts Education from Hebrew College.

Hartman has danced professionally for a wide range of companies, including Peninsula Ballet Theatre, Bossov Ballet, and even a tour of the Mikhaylovsky Theatre Ballet in St. Petersburg. She currently works as a barre, pilates, and boxing instructor in the SF Bay Area, as well as being a project manager for the San Francisco Dance Film Festival, a position she took up alongside SFB principal Tiit Helimets in 2014.

She is also working towards founding her own school and company. She has prior experience- she was founder and AD of the Moirai Ballet between 2012 and 2014. Her goal is to make ballets are, in her own words, “inclusive and culturally absorbent”- that is, ones that express the full range of experiences of their dancers and audiences. Both her own company and her interest in dance film are geared towards this goal of inclusiveness.

Sarah is someone I met through Tumblr and is now one of my coolest and most intelligent friends. It’s so nice seeing her get some more recognition for all the hard work she’s done.
